24-Hour Animation Challenge
This short animation was created as part of a 24-hour animation challenge, requiring the complete conceptualization, production, and final rendering of an animated work within a single day. Participants were permitted to use any animation technique or production method, while the final work was required to be between one and two minutes in length.
The project used Steamboat Willie as a point of departure, responding to the character’s transition into the public domain and the broader cultural discussion surrounding open-content reuse, copyright, and reinterpretation. While the source material carries a strong association with popular entertainment, the project approached it as an opportunity to investigate how historically recognizable imagery can be transformed through contemporary digital production methods.
The animation combines multiple animation techniques, including layered 2D and 3D processes, compositing, lighting, camera movement, timing, and digital effects. Particular emphasis was placed on experimentation with lighting and atmosphere, using visual contrast and spatial composition to reinterpret familiar imagery rather than simply reproduce the original animation.
The severe time limitation became an important part of the creative process. The 24-hour format required rapid decision-making, efficient production planning, asset development, animation, editing, and rendering. As a creative-research exercise, the project examines how technical constraints can encourage experimentation, improvisation, and alternative approaches to animation production.
