The Statue is an interdisciplinary animation project created by Megan Ehrhart and Knut Hybinette in collaboration with composer Charles Fernandez. Conceived as a visual interpretation of Fernandez’s ballet score, the work reimagines the musical narrative through a series of ethereal animated sequences that explore transformation, movement, theatricality, and the relationship between sound and image.The project was developed as a sequence of short animated chapters corresponding to individual musical compositions and was presented in conjunction with a live performance by the Tarleton State University Wind Ensemble and ballet dancers on April 23, 2017. By combining animation, original music, dance, and live performance, The Statue examines the possibilities of interdisciplinary storytelling and the translation of musical structure into visual form.
Lover’s Lament is a 3D animated dance sequence created as part of The Statue, an interdisciplinary collaboration by Megan Ehrhart and Knut Hybinette with composer Charles Fernandez. Conceived in response to Fernandez’s ballet score, the animation translates musical structure and emotional tone into a visual performance centered on intimacy, longing, separation, and mourning.
Two translucent humanoid figures move through an ethereal, atmospheric space, alternating between synchronized gestures, partnered movement, and moments of physical distance. The choreography functions as a form of non-verbal storytelling, using the virtual body to communicate emotional tension and relational change.
The work draws on ideas of embodiment, somatic expression, and digital performance. The figures’ reflective and translucent surfaces suggest memory, fragility, and impermanence, while the surrounding mist and suspended environment create a liminal space between physical presence and emotional absence.
Within The Statue, Lover’s Lament functions as a digital pas de deux, integrating animation, music, choreography, and theatrical performance to explore how movement and sound can be translated into visual form.
